India has strongly criticized the recent actions in Bangladesh involving the sedition charges against Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari and 17 others. The charges stem from an incident in Chattogram, where saffron flags were allegedly hoisted above a flag claimed to represent Bangladesh. This development has sparked widespread concern, with Hindu organizations both in India and Bangladesh condemning the move as a targeted action against the country’s minority Hindu community.
The monk, who has been advocating for an eight-point minority protection agenda, including establishing a tribunal for persecutors of minorities and a dedicated ministry for minority rights, labeled the charges as baseless and an attempt to suppress minority voices. Protests in Dhaka and Chattogram have demanded the immediate withdrawal of these charges. Observers note that communal tensions have risen, with the Hindu population in Bangladesh shrinking drastically over decades, attributed to systemic challenges and violence.
