At Least 20 Dead as Heavy Rains Pound Telangana, Andhra; Reddy Urges Centre to Declare National Calamity

The states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have been reeling under the impact of heavy rains that have led to devastating floods, claiming the lives of at least 20 people and displacing thousands. The relentless downpour has inundated several areas, causing widespread destruction and pushing local authorities to their limits. In response to the escalating crisis, Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has urged the central government to declare the situation a national calamity.

The torrential rains have triggered landslides, swept away homes, and destroyed crops, leaving a trail of devastation in their wake. The affected regions have seen rivers breaching their banks, with floodwaters submerging entire villages and towns. Rescue operations are ongoing, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local authorities working around the clock to evacuate residents from the worst-hit areas.

The situation is particularly dire in rural areas, where the infrastructure has been severely damaged, hampering relief efforts. Roads and bridges have been washed away, cutting off access to several remote villages. The lack of connectivity has made it difficult for rescue teams to reach those in need, exacerbating the crisis.

Chief Minister Reddy has made a fervent appeal to the central government, calling for immediate assistance and the declaration of a national calamity to ensure that the affected regions receive the aid they desperately need. The financial strain on the state governments is immense, and the declaration would facilitate the allocation of central funds for relief and rehabilitation efforts.

As the rains show no signs of abating, the situation remains critical. The affected communities are in urgent need of assistance, and the focus now shifts to providing them with the resources necessary to rebuild their lives.
