The Debate on EVMs and Trust in Democracy
Election Commission of India (ECI) Chief Rajiv Kumar recently addressed criticisms and skepticism surrounding Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). During a press briefing, Kumar highlighted how selective narratives often dominate discussions, sidelining facts and undermining public trust in democratic processes.
Rajiv Kumar’s Elon Musk Reference
Kumar referenced two viral posts by Elon Musk to emphasize the pitfalls of following biased narratives. In one instance, Musk spoke about the importance of technology-driven systems that withstand scrutiny, drawing parallels to the reliability of EVMs. Kumar remarked, “When technology suits us, we celebrate it, but when it challenges our biases, we question it.”
EVMs: A Robust Voting Mechanism
The ECI Chief reiterated that India’s EVMs are among the most secure and tamper-proof voting systems globally. He explained their multi-layered security features, which have been tested and verified over decades. Kumar stated, “Despite numerous challenges and allegations, no substantial evidence has ever proven EVM manipulation.”
Public Perception and Responsibility
Kumar stressed the need for public and media responsibility in shaping balanced perceptions about democratic institutions. He said, “Selective outrage and misinformation campaigns can erode trust in systems built on years of research and integrity.”
Global Validation of India’s EVMs
The conversation also touched upon how several countries have appreciated India’s EVM technology. Kumar highlighted the significance of maintaining faith in democratic processes, especially in an era where misinformation spreads rapidly.
