Accused’s Statement in Kolkata Court
During the trial for the heinous rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, accused Sanjay Roy presented a unique defense. He claimed that his rudraksh chain, a sacred Hindu symbol he always wore, remained intact, suggesting he couldn’t have committed the crime. Roy stated, “I always wear a chain of rudraksh on my neck.
If I committed the crime, my chain would have been broken at the place of occurrence. I can’t commit this crime.”
Court’s Verdict
Despite Roy’s assertions, the Sealdah Court found him guilty based on substantial evidence, including DNA and biological samples. The court announced that the sentencing, which could range from life imprisonment to the death penalty, would be determined on Monday.
Public Reaction
The case has sparked widespread outrage, leading to protests and demands for justice. The victim’s family and the medical community have been vocal in seeking stringent punishment for the perpetrator.
