Opinion | India’s Changing Consumption Patterns Have Implications for Agricultural Policy

As India’s consumption habits shift in response to economic growth, urbanization, and globalization, the country’s agricultural policy must adapt to these changing patterns. On September 22, 2024, experts weighed in on how the growing demand for diversified diets, including higher consumption of protein, dairy, and processed foods, is impacting India’s agricultural landscape.

Traditionally, Indian agriculture has focused on staple crops like rice and wheat, but the demand for fruits, vegetables, and animal-based products is on the rise. This shift is being driven by an increasingly urban population with higher disposable incomes and changing dietary preferences. The challenge for policymakers is to ensure that India’s agricultural sector can keep pace with these changes while also addressing issues like climate resilience and sustainability.

Experts argue that India’s agricultural policy must prioritize diversification, innovation in farming practices, and support for smallholder farmers to meet the evolving demands. Additionally, there is growing recognition of the need for a more robust supply chain to reduce food waste and improve access to markets for farmers. As India continues to modernize, its agricultural policies will need to reflect these new consumption patterns, ensuring food security while supporting economic growth.
