As the Jammu and Kashmir polls approach, the plight of Kashmiri Pandits remains a central issue. On September 24, 2024, political parties, including the BJP, Congress, and National Conference (NC), scrambled to win the trust of this displaced community. Once a thriving population in the Kashmir Valley, the Pandits have been living as refugees in their homeland for decades, following their mass exodus in the 1990s due to militancy.
The BJP has consistently promised to ensure the safe return of Pandits to the Valley, but progress remains slow. Congress, too, has vowed to provide a secure and dignified life for the Pandits, while the NC seeks a balanced approach to address the concerns of all communities in Kashmir. However, the Pandits remain skeptical of all political promises, wary of becoming mere pawns in the electoral game.
The upcoming elections are being viewed as a crucial moment for political parties to genuinely address the long-standing concerns of the Pandit community, including their right to live freely in their ancestral homes.
