BCCI Likely to Reinstate Old Retention Rule, Good News for MS Dhoni Fans!

In a major development, the BCCI is reportedly considering bringing back an old IPL retention rule that could allow Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player. This rule, which was in place since IPL’s inception but scrapped in 2021, classifies players retired from international cricket for at least five years as uncapped. The rule’s return could be a game-changer, allowing CSK to retain Dhoni at a lower cost, enabling them to preserve their budget for other players.

The Implications for CSK and Dhoni

CSK’s management pushed for the rule’s return during a meeting between IPL franchise owners and BCCI officials last month. While other franchises were hesitant, BCCI is strongly considering the proposal. If implemented, this rule would allow CSK to retain Dhoni as an uncapped player for just Rs 4 crore, significantly lower than the Rs 12 crore he was retained for before the 2022 mega auction. This move would not only help CSK manage their finances better but also potentially extend Dhoni’s career in the IPL.

Dhoni’s Take on His IPL Future

At a recent event in Hyderabad, Dhoni spoke about his future in the IPL, saying he would wait for the official player regulations before making any decisions. He emphasized that any decision would need to be in the best interest of the team. Dhoni had stepped down as CSK’s captain before IPL 2024, passing the mantle to Ruturaj Gaikwad. However, he still played a significant role for the team, contributing 161 runs at a staggering strike rate of 220.55 during the season.

The Rule’s Broader Impact

The potential reinstatement of this rule has sparked discussions across the cricketing world. Even veteran off-spinner R Ashwin weighed in, acknowledging that Dhoni could be considered an uncapped player under these guidelines since he retired from international cricket years ago. Ashwin noted that while Dhoni’s status as an uncapped player might seem unusual, the rule’s return would be a strategic boon for CSK.

The revival of this retention rule would be a significant move by BCCI, offering CSK fans the chance to see their beloved “Thala” in action for another season without compromising the team’s budget. With Dhoni’s future in the balance, all eyes are on the BCCI’s next move as the 2025 IPL season approaches.
